Criminal charges laid after Calgary market collapse that injured 8 people

Two Calgarians are facing charges after a large LED screen fell at a pop-up market last summer, injuring eight people.

The equipment collapsed on the crowd at the Naija Market Day event at Calgary’s City Hall Plaza on June 28, 2025.

Police say the screen, which was approximately two metres high and 3.5 metres wide, weighed 397 pounds (180 kg).

All of the eight people injured – including a child – required hospitalization.

According to the Naija Market Day website, the travelling African market showcases food, fashion, arts, culture and music.

Police launched a criminal investigation and determined the collapse was the result of “improper set-up and a failure to address changing weather and crowd conditions.”

A 48-year-old man and a 41-year-old man are both charged with criminal negligence causing bodily harm.

They are scheduled to appear in court on Feb. 19.
