Alberta sheriffs have closed a problem property in Calgary that officers were frequently called to for allegations of drug activity and criminal behaviour. The Safer Communities and Neighbourhoods unit (SCAN) closed the home, located at 5128 Maryvale Dr. N.E., on Monday. The property will be boarded up and fenced off, and all the locks will be changed. No one is allowed to enter the home for 90 days, until the closure period ends on Jan. 14, 2026. A community safety order for the home will remain in effect for an additional two years, until Jan. 14, 2028. Calgary police say officers attended the property 45 times between March 2023 and March 2025. “This residence had a significant amount of criminal activity associated to it, including violence, and drug and property offences, which deeply affected the surrounding community’s sense of safety,” said Lee Dunbar, acting inspector with the Calgary Police Service. “The closure of this residence is an important step towards ensuring that neighbouring residents feel safe while out in the community.” Insp. Brent Pickard of SCAN said there was one main tenant who lived in the home, but “numerous” people have resided there through the course of the investigation. “It’s kind of turned into a flop house, where people will come for varying amounts of time,” he said. “Sometimes they stay for a few minutes, or sometimes they stay for a couple hours or a few days.” Since its inception in 2008, the SCAN unit has investigated more than 10,000 properties and issued more than 135 community safety orders.
