The FIFA World Cup isn’t the only competition that our nation’s best is competing in, and it’s not for any ordinary joe, but the best of the best baristas this nation has to offer. Seventeen competitors are taking part, with Calgary bringing in a strong contingent. “The calibre of competitors -- the preparation, the coffee being used is [at] a whole other level,” said Jeremy Ho, Monogram Coffee co-founder and organizer of the 2026 Canadian National Barista Championship. Ho won the crown of best barista in 2012, and much like the beans used today, the craft has come a long way. “Calgary has a wonderful collection of great roasters as well,” said Ho. “Not just Monogram but other ones in Calgary that are well known across Canada.” Taking it up a notch David Kim is competing in his 10th nationals. His best finish was second, and Kim says he is taking it up a notch this year. “I know what I need to do and I practice well,” said Kim. “I’m more excited than nervous.” Using blends of spices, and a bit of wine, Kim hopes to wow the judges -- but according to former national champion, Jill Hoff, its not just about the taste, but the presentation as well. “You need to be able to capture the judge’s attention, have a compelling story, something that makes sense, and connect your story to every course that you serve,” Hoff said. After years of coaching, Hoff is frothing at the cup to get another shot at a world title. “This is my first year coming back for five years,” said Hoff. “I would love to take home the title of course.” The Canadian National Barista Championship will continue preliminaries on Saturday, with the finals on Sunday, from 11 a.m. to 7 p.m. at School House Roasting. The winner of the competition will represent Canada at the World Barista Championship in Panama later this year.
