Nerds, cosplay fans and collectors of all kinds enjoyed YYCFanFair on the weekend. The event was billed as “Calgary’s biggest day of free nerdity.” It was held at the Thorncliffe Greenview Community Association on Saturday. It featured local comic and collectible vendors, cosplay booths, and a special guest: WWE star Tyson Kidd, who signed autographs and posed for photos with fans. Admission was free, in an effort to make the fun barrier-free to all. “I think it’s important to have events like this that are very much fan focused and attendee focused,” said Jeff McNair, one of the event’s organizers. “A lot of times, events like this can tend to be large corporate-type money machines that put a lot of pressure on attendees, and it makes it feel more transactional,” he said. “Our event focuses entirely on a community cohesive event where everybody is here and excited and just sharing their passion for this stuff.” Donations were collected at the event to support Canadian veterans. This was the third year for YYCFanFair.
