A 15-year-old wrestler from Calgary is competing in the 2026 U17 World Championships in Azerbaijan. Calgarian Maya Naicker won the U15 Canadian Wrestling Championship back in 2024, and is hopeful she’ll win this competition too. The 2026 World Championship started Monday and runs until Aug. 2. The Canadian team is competing in the women’s wrestling and men’s freestyle. “Our wrestlers, all of whom have competed internationally, are excited to test their mettle against the world’s best in their age group,” said Wrestling Canada Lutte’s high performance director Chris Woodcroft. Team Canada consists of seven athletes from British Columbia, four from Ontario, one from Saskatoon and one from Alberta. Accompanying the team are the coaching staff and team officials.
