Alberta’s unemployment rate was unchanged in April, despite an employment gain. Statistics Canada released its April 2025 Labour Force Survey on Friday, which showed Alberta’s jobless rate sitting at 7.1 per cent, the same as the month prior. According to the report, employment in Alberta increased by 15,000 (+0.6%) in April, offsetting a decline in March. Looking at Alberta cities, Edmonton’s unemployment rate was 7.3 per cent in April compared to 7.2 per cent in March. Calgary sat at 7.4 per cent last month, compared to 7.2 per cent the month prior. “Calgary continues to lead major Canadian cities in labour force participation,” said Kate Koplovich, director of strategy at Calgary Economic Development. “With an unemployment rate still below the 12-month average, the city is demonstrating relative resilience in a shifting economic landscape.” Lethbridge was 5.4 percent in April compared to 5.1 per cent in March. In Red Deer, unemployment dropped to 8.2 to from 8.5 per cent. Nationally, the unemployment rate was 6.9 per cent in April. The April Labour Force Survey examined the week of April 13 to 19, 2025.
