Albertans are being asked to weigh in on the future of nuclear power in the province. As part of the province’s engagement process, a provincial advisory panel is holding its first public information session on Monday morning. The Nuclear Energy Engagement and Advisory Panel was formed in August. Two online Q&A webinars — one on Monday and another on Wednesday — are the first opportunities for Albertans to ask the panel questions directly. A more technical session focused on nuclear safety and waste management is also scheduled for Jan. 16, 2026. Alberta currently gets the majority of its power from natural gas, but discussions about nuclear energy have been in the works for a long time. Premier Danielle Smith ramped up the effort in July, saying nuclear power could be good for oilsands projects and provide a reliable, stable source of energy for Albertans. People can sign up for the engagement sessions on the province’s website. The panel’s final report, due at the end of March, will provide recommendations on how Alberta should build out its nuclear sector.
