3 homes heavily damaged in New Brighton fire

A two-alarm fire tore through three homes and damaged two more on Monday night. Mason DePatie reports.

Calgary fire crews battled a blaze in the city’s southeast on Monday night.

The Calgary Fire Department was dispatched to the 1100 block of New Brighton Park S.E. around 8:40 p.m.

Smoke billowed as flames ate away at the source home, and the fire then spread.

Within minutes, police received a request to help scrambling fire crews.

“(Firefighters) are battling a fire that has spread to three garages on New Brighton Park S.E.,” police said.

“CPS units on scene are providing crowd control, scene security and evacuation assistance.”

The Calgary Fire Department said the fire broke out in a two-storey single family home and quickly spread to neighbouring properties.

All of the affected homes were extensively damaged by fire, smoke and water.

Two other homes sustained moderate damage.

The CFD said 21 people were forced out of their homes because of the fire. Two dogs also got out safely.

Officials say one person was treated at the scene for smoke inhalation and later released.

Nearby neighbours along New Brighton Park S.E. were evacuated from their homes.

Many lined the street to watch from a distance as fire crews continued to work on putting out the blaze.

Police said as the fire was extinguished, firefighters “discovered a gas leak and requested all units and residents move back from the scene.”

Police also noted local traffic was impacted by the incident.

The CFD says the residents of the affected homes are expected to be displaced for an undetermined amount of time.
