Canadian Geographic has chosen the winners of this year’s Canadian Wildlife Photography competition -- and three of them are from Alberta. The award celebrates remarkable images of Canadian wildlife. With more than 10,000 entries, 18 were honoured, including Chris Gibbs from Calgary, who was runner up in the Terrestrial Life category for his photo of two bears. Receiving honourable mentions were Dalin Laqua from Okotoks in the Aquatic Life category and 2024 Photographer of the Year award winner Shane Turgeon from Edmonton in the Things With Wings category. The winning photographers were honoured in four different categories: Terrestrial Life, Aquatic Life, Flora and fungi and Things With Wings. The winning images will be published in the magazine’s November/December issue. On social media, Gibbs posted: “Having my work recognized alongside such remarkably talented peers is truly humbling. A sincere thank you to Canadian Geographic and the judges for this wonderful honour. “Congratulations to all the winners and finalists whose stunning imagery showcases the incredible beauty of our Canadian wild spaces.” The winner was Paradise, Newfoundland-based David Sturge, who begins a two-year term as an Audain Emerging Photographer-in-Residence with Canadian Geographic. “There were many new names among the winners this year, which is incredibly exciting for our photography community,” said Canadian Geographic editor-in-chief Alexandra Pope, in a media release. “The magazine team and our judges were impressed with the diversity of species and habitats depicted in the entries. “It just goes to show: we Canadians love our wildlife!”
