2 University of Calgary scholars named winners of Killam Awards for exceptional research

Dr. Shabir Barzenjeh was one of two University of Calgary scholars to receive Killam Awards for their research. Barzenjeh is an expert in next generation quantum technology.

Two scholars at the University of Calgary are claiming one of Canada’s highest scholarly honours as their own.

Nigel Shrive and Shabir Barzenjeh have earned the Dorothy Killam Award, and a $100,000 prize to each, to be put toward research.

Shrive, from the University of Calgary, has been awarded the prize for his groundbreaking work in biomedical and civil engineering.

He’s known for his research in areas such as human mobility, cardiovascular mechanics, regenerative medicine and novel medical technologies.

Part of that research led to obtaining a patent for an artificial knee, which is still being used worldwide.

Barzenjeh, also at U of C, won the Killam Fellowship for his work at advancing next-generation quantum technology.

The national awards recognize Canadian researchers whose work is helping shape the country’s future through innovation and discovery.
