‘Increase the risk of a crash’: More than 80,000 vehicles recalled in Canada

Hyundai has recalled more than 80,000 vehicles in Canada due to a “safety risk” that could lead to an increased risk of crash.

In a recall notice posted on Transport Canada first on May 19 and later updated last Thursday, the automaker said there could be a software problem on certain vehicles that could cause the front camera to malfunction.

“On certain vehicles, a software problem with the front camera could cause the forward collision avoidance (FCA) system to brake suddenly,” the recall alert said.

“A vehicle that brakes suddenly when there’s no risk of a collision could increase the risk of a crash.”

Vehicles affected by the recall include the following:

• Hyundai Santa Cruz models manufactured in 2025
• Hyundai Tucson models manufactured in 2025 and 2026

The recall, however, noted that it affected the gas, hybrid (HEV) and plug-in hybrid (PHEV) models of the 2026 models of the Hyundai Tucson.

The automaker will notify the affected customers in writing and advise them to take their vehicles to a dealership to update the front camera software, the recall said.

Hyundai had also initiated a massive recall south of the border for more than 400,000 vehicles citing the same issue with the “forward collision avoidance system,” earlier this month.

“Hyundai Motor America (Hyundai) is recalling certain 2025-2026 Santa Cruz, Tucson, Tucson Hybrid, and Tucson Plug-In Hybrid Electric (PHEV) vehicles,” the recall posted on the United States’ National Highway Traffic Safety Administration website said.

“Software in the front cameras may cause the forward collision avoidance system to activate prematurely and unexpectedly apply the brakes.”

This recall comes in the footsteps of another from the same automaker from last week for around 6,000 vehicles of the Hyundai Elantra hybrid models from the 2024, 2025 and 2026 citing a component in the hybrid system that could overheat and increase the risk of a fire.
