Nearly 44,000 SUVs recalled in Canada over detaching seatbelts

Hyundai is recalling nearly 44,000 vehicles in Canada, warning seatbelts could detach in the event of a crash, increasing the risk of injury.

The recalled vehicles are all Hyundai Palisades, with the model years 2020, 2021, 2022, 2023, 2024 and 2025. Approximately 43,990 Canadian SUVs are affected, Transport Canada said in an advisory updated Wednesday.

The recall announcement said some seatbelt buckles in the driver’s, front passenger and second-row outboard seats in certain vehicles “may not have been manufactured properly,” and may not latch correctly.

Hyundai recommends drivers and passengers firmly latch their seatbelts and pull on them after latching to ensure that they are secured, until the recall repairs are completed, according to Transport Canada’s recall notice.

“Hyundai will notify owners by mail and advise you to take your vehicle to a dealership to inspect and, if necessary, replace the seatbelt buckle(s),” the announcement read.

Earlier in May, Transport Canada announced a recall of 117 Hyundai Palisade vehicles from 2025 for an unrelated safety risk.

“A short circuit can create a fire risk,” the recall announcement said.

According to the notice, the electric oil pump may not have been manufactured properly in certain vehicles. This could potentially lead to a short circuit due to water entering the electric oil pump controller.

Other major vehicle makers have issued recalls in recent weeks over a variety of issues, including Toyota, Subaru, Ford, Mazda and Jeep.
