S&P/TSX composite up more than 300 points

TORONTO — Canada’s main stock index rose more than 300 points in late-morning trading, helped by strength in the base metals sector, while U.S. stock markets also climbed.

The S&P/TSX composite index was up 317.76 points at 35,052.65.

In New York, the Dow Jones industrial average was up 153.51 points at 51,232.39. The S&P 500 index was up 17.87 points at 7,617.83, while the Nasdaq composite was up 71.60 points at 27,158.41.

The Canadian dollar traded for 72.32 cents US compared with 72.27 cents US on Monday.

The July crude oil contract was down 49 cents at US$91.67 per barrel.

The August gold contract was up US$28.40 at US$4,534.70 an ounce.
