TORONTO — Canada’s main stock index was down more than 300 points in late-morning trading, weighed down by losses in the base metal, technology and telecom sectors, while U.S. stock markets also fell amid a rise in oil prices. The November crude oil contract was up US$2.99 at US$95.40 per barrel. The S&P/TSX composite index was down 341.98 points at 35,458.91. In New York, the Dow Jones industrial average was down 386.05 points at 51,442.57. The S&P 500 index was down 64.80 points at 7,678.61, while the Nasdaq composite was down 279.38 points at 26,789.34. The Canadian dollar traded for 70.58 cents US compared with 70.70 cents US on Friday.
