Winter maintenance event declared in Barrie as snow squalls hammer region

Barrie is currently under a Winter Maintenance Event as persistent snow squalls continue to impact the city and surrounding areas, creating dangerous travel conditions and prompting overnight parking restrictions.

As we ring in the new year, the City of Barrie has confirmed that the overnight parking by-law will be enforced starting Jan. 1.

On-street parking is not permitted from 3 a.m. to 6 a.m. within the Downtown Business Improvement Area, and from 12:01 a.m. to 7 a.m. on all other city streets.

Theses restrictions are necessary to allow snowplows and maintenance crews to clear roads efficiently and safely.

More snow to ring in the new year

The City of Barrie is currently under an Orange Warning.

Environment Canada warns that snow squalls off Georgian Bay are expected to remain stationary, bringing near-zero visibility due to heavy snow and blowing snow.

Locals could see additional snowfall amounts of 10 to 30 centimetres. Conditions are expected to persist through Wednesday and may continue into Thursday for some areas, including Barrie, Collingwood, and Hillsdale.

“Travel will likely be extremely hazardous. Visibility will likely be suddenly reduced to near zero at times. Road closures are possible,” stated the national weather agency.
