Winter beauty with a cost: Why icicles could spell trouble for homes

Those glittering icicles hanging from your roof might look postcard-perfect, but they could be quietly signalling trouble overhead.

As winter continues to brew around Simcoe County, homeowners are being warned about the hidden danger behind those frozen fringes: ice dams.

These thick ridges of ice form along the edge of a roof when melting snow refreezes before it can drain away. Trapped water has nowhere to go but back under shingles, where it can seep into ceilings, walls, and insulation and often before anyone notices the damage.

The Township of Springwater is urging residents not to take matters into their own hands. Chipping away at ice dams with hammers, chisels, or shovels can be extremely dangerous and may cause serious damage to roofing materials.

Falls, flying ice, and compromised shingles are common issues.

Experts recommend contacting a professional who has the proper tools and experience to remove ice dams without putting people or property at risk.
