Work along one of Barrie’s busiest corridors is progressing into its next phase, with crews making final pushes before the winter freeze. On Thursday, the City of Barrie said base asphalt has now been laid on Yonge Street and St. Paul’s Crescent from Mapleview Drive East to the future Madelaine Drive. Temporary lines are in place, allowing two lanes of traffic to move onto the east side of Yonge Street. St. Paul’s Crescent has officially reopened, with a new intersection at Yonge Street. What’s next? The city says crews will now shift their focus to the west side of Yonge Street. Work includes installing catch basins, sanitary sewers and water and sewer connections, plus curbs and base asphalt. Two crews will work from St. Paul’s Crescent, with one heading north toward Mapleview Drive East and the other south toward Lockhart Road. Utility relocation work is expected to continue at the same time. Overall improvements This project is part of the city’s larger reconstruction of Yonge Street between Mapleview Drive East and Lockhart Road. Once complete, Yonge Street will have five lanes, including a cycle-track and a sidewalk. It also features a new water and sewer infrastructure, storm sewers, street lighting and traffic signal improvements. The city says people in the area should expect some noise, dust and delays while construction continues.
