An extra chromosome makes the world a more special place. World Down Syndrome Day celebrates lives and contributions of people with Down Syndrome; which is naturally created by the tripling of the 21st chromosome. “World Down Syndrome Day is about celebrating the amazing individuals in our community and continuing to build a world where people with Down Syndrome are valued, included, and given every opportunity to thrive,” said the Down Syndrome Association of Simcoe County. Across the world, families, schools, and organizations mark the day by sharing stories, building awareness, and celebrating the incredible contributions people with Down Syndrome make. One of the most recognizable traditions of the day is wearing mismatched or brightly coloured socks. Socks are chosen because their shape resembles chromosomes, and wearing mismatched socks is a fun and visible way to start conversations about inclusion, acceptance, and celebrating differences.
