The City of Barrie has dedicated this week to informing residents about waste reduction and management. The City is in support of a circular economy, which is a system that keeps items in circulation as long as possible. Waste Reduction Week, running from Monday to Sunday, is all a part of Circular Economy Month which runs throughout October. According to the City of Barrie website, the circular economy framework is all about moving toward greener, more sustainable options. It’s important because it supports positive environmental outcomes, reduces reliance on raw materials, stimulates innovation, and supports economic growth and competitiveness. Throughout the week, City staff will host drop-in information sessions at the Barrie Public Library’s Downtown Branch (60 Worsley Street) from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. Each session will highlight a topic related to waste reduction or the circular economy. Monday was “Meet the Landfill” session which was based on redirecting waste, including mattress and shingle recycling, e-waste, and batteries. Wednesday is “E-Waste,” where residents can learn about recycling electronics, repair cafés, and Battery Collection Week. Friday is all about food waste reduction – all the tips and tricks to reduce food in your day-to-day life. There is also the option to stop by the Barrie Farmers’ Market from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m., where the City will be providing general information about sorting waste collection.
