A trip to the beach is about to get a little fresher - literally - with Wasaga Beach rolling out two new self-cleaning washrooms just in time for summer crowds. As demolition and cleanup continue at Beach Area One, the Town announced it’s purchasing two ‘smart washroom’ units from Canadian-based company Urban Blu. The facilities are being introduced as a pilot project to improve visitor amenities and replace a washroom facility that was removed during recent redevelopment efforts. The state-of-the-art washrooms are programmable for usage and capable of self-washing, disinfecting, and drying after each use, a move the town hopes will enhance cleanliness and reduce maintenance demands during peak tourism season. “It’s really about improving the customer experience washrooms, rinse facilities, change rooms these kinds of amenities are really important in terms of the visitor experience,” said Sandra Watts, director of communications with the town. The washrooms, expected to be operational by the end of June, will cost the town roughly $430,000 for both units. Despite ongoing construction in the area, the town anticipates more than two million people will visit Wasaga Beach this summer. “I think it’s a good idea over here because so many people come here,” resident Guy Dugay said. “It would be nice and clean all the time - that’s the way it should have been right from the beginning.” The Town says the pilot project will be closely monitored over the summer, with future decisions on additional units or upgrades based on usage, feedback and overall performance.
