Before speeding through a yellow light, think twice about the consequences. New cameras begin issuing penalties in Bradford West Gwillimbury starting Thursday. Five intersections across the town have been equipped with devices designed to catch drivers entering an intersection after the light has already turned red. “Red light cameras are another tool to help encourage safe driving and reduce collisions at our intersections,” said Mayor James Leduc. “We want everyone travelling through Bradford West Gwillimbury to get where they are going safely.” Five camera locations The cameras are located at these five intersections: Holland Street West and Sideroad 10, Holland Street West and West Park Avenue, Holland Street West and Professor Day Drive/Melbourne Drive, Holland Street East and Bridge/Dissette Street, Line 8 and Barrie Street. The West Park Avenue and Professor Day Drive/Melbourne Drive locations fall within Community Safety Zones, where the town says drivers will face even higher penalties. A red-light violation outside a Community Safety Zone carries a total penalty of $328.25. Within a Community Safety Zone, that jumps to $493.25. The town says the penalties are issued to the vehicle’s registered owner and do not result in demerit points or affect the driver’s insurance. Here’s how it works When a potential violation takes place, the camera snags two photos, one showing the vehicle at or near the stop line and another showing it in or travelling through the intersection. The town says each camera location was selected using several factors, like crash statistics, traffic volumes, red-light-running data and the presence of vulnerable road users. Drivers who receive a penalty order will be able to pay the fine or request an appeal through the town’s red light camera website. Payments can also be made at the town’s administrative office.
