As temperatures begin to drop, Barrie police are asking residents to winter prep homes, vehicles and other property. Police recommend residents start off with simple steps to ensure safety, like double-checking exterior lights to make sure they are working and replacing bulbs that are not functional. Similarly, residents are reminded to secure all property that is typically left outdoors, such as bikes, tools and ladders and lock external properties such as sheds, garages and other outdoor buildings. Additionally, police encourage the safe storage of seasoning equipment and discourage leaving expensive items in street view. Locking windows and doors, including those in the basement of your home, is also key, police say, as is ensuring the functionality of surveillance equipment such as cameras, motion lights and other security devices placed around the home. Police also encourage residents to ensure snow-removal equipment is accessible and ready for use. “As temperatures drop, motorists should also prepare for changing road conditions,” police said. Seasonal maintenance such as the use of winter tires, making sure tires are properly inflated and keeping windshield fluid topped up are all actions police recommend to drivers.
