The OPP released a video statement on Wednesday in response to increased extortion cases across the Town of Caledon and Dufferin County. According to the OPP, the Caledon and Dufferin County detachments have investigated more than 45 extortion incidents since 2023 that involved threats, and in some cases, gunfire at homes or local businesses. The detachments also reported such in a news release a week and a half ago. “I want to reassure our communities that we are taking every extortion report seriously,” said Insp. Natalie Majer, Commander of Caledon OPP, in the video statement. “Over the last two years, several arrests have been made, however the investigation remains active.” The OPP says victims have been contacted by phone or text and extorted for money, with criminals targeting homes or businesses in shootings when victims have refused to comply. Police believe that members of the South Asian community have been targeted by suspected organized crime groups. No injuries have been reported by the OPP in its investigation, which is being led by the Central Region Criminal Investigation Branch. “Extortion is a crime and impacts entire communities,” continued Insp. Majer. “The OPP is committed to identify the individuals who are extorting victims in order to hold them accountable.” Those who receive threatening calls or messages are urged to report them to police immediately. Callers are known to use high-pressure intimidation tacticts. Anyone with information that may help the OPP’s extortion investigation is asked to come forward.
