Small town crime ain't what it used to be. These days, gangs and human trafficking are the critical safety concerns Innisfil resdients are concerned about. To that end, the Town of Innisfil is partnering with local organizations to hold a series of programs and events in recognition of Crime Prevention Week. The week-long campaign emphasizes the importance of community engagement in addressing issues that impact youth and the wider community. "Our goal is to raise awareness about crime prevention and community safety this Crime Prevention Week," said Mayor Lynn Dollin. "The programs and educational events will highlight the urgent topics of gang activity, human trafficking, and the influence of social media while providing practical tips for individuals and families to safeguard their well-being." Residents are invited to join several activities, including an informative presentation, film screening, youth-centred programming, and more. Building Safer Communities: Gangs, Human Trafficking, and the Role of Social Media On November 4, Ontario Gang Investigators Association and South Simcoe Police Service will present the local impact of street gangs and human trafficking from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. at the Innisfil ideaLAB & Library's Lakeshore Branch. Experts will discuss how social media is used to lure and groom young people and share practical tips for recognizing and responding to these threats. Registration is encouraged. Film Screening of “Traffick on 401” – Real2Reel Film Festival On November 5, United Way Simcoe Muskoka is screening an impactful film on sex trafficking along Ontario’s highways at the Innisfil ideaLAB & Library’s Lakeshore Branch from 6:30 p.m. to 8:30 p.m. Following the screening, a panel of experts including representatives from Victim Services Simcoe County, My Friend's House, and South Simcoe Police Service will lead a discussion on how the issue is being addressed locally and what community members can do to help combat trafficking. Tickets can be purchased for $5. Community Care & Safety Fair On November 6, residents are invited to drop by the Innisfil Recreational Complex from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. to connect with local organizations supporting community safety and well-being. The Innisfil YMCA will also offer a free open swim from 7:30 to 8:30 p.m. Other activities: The 2024 Crime Prevention Week series is supported through the town's multi-year Building Safer Communities project, funded by the Government of Canada.
