Six people from Barrie and surrounding areas including one retired Toronto police officer and his son, are among 27 people charged following a lengthy investigation into alleged organized crime and corruption in the Greater Toronto Area. Among the accused facing charges is John Madeley Sr., a 55-year-old Barrie man who is a recently retired constable with Toronto Police Service. He is facing numerous charges including breach of trust, unauthorized use of a computer and possession of a prohibited weapon. His son, John Madeley Jr., 29, from Barrie is facing similar charges. He is an active member of Toronto Police Service and was sworn in four years ago. Project South, the name of the investigation, revealed that in June 2025, a group of cops were conspiring to commit murder at a residence with a York Regional Police cruiser. The group were in a vehicle that allegedly crashed into the cruiser. Police took three suspects into custody. Through the seven-month investigation that started in June 2025, investigators allege that one of the accused was a constable who had illegally accessed confidential information in a police database. The confidential information, police say, was shared with people who police believe are known to various criminal networks. A 23-year-old Innisfil man along with two others, has access to the confidential information and is facing numerous weapons-related charges. The trio was recruiting other people to carry out crimes at various locations. A Barrie man, 33, is facing weapons-related charges. Police charged a 23-year-old from Innisfil with weapons-related charges. A 31-year-old from Bradford is facing numerous drug trafficking-related charges. The allegations against the accused have not been tested in court.
