Provincial police are investigating reports of hate-motivated materials that were spread in Orillia last weekend. According to Orillia OPP, the detachment was informed last Sunday about antisemitic materials being distributed across the city. An investigation has since begun by the OPP Hate/Extremism and Major Crime units. “The OPP takes all reports of hate-motivated incidents and crimes very seriously,” said the OPP in a news release. “Acts that target individuals or communities based on race, religion, ethnicity, sexual orientation, gender identity, or other protected characteristics have no place in our communities and will not be tolerated.” Police are asking Orillia residents to check their security cameras from last Saturday evening to midday last Sunday. Anyone with footage that can help identify a suspect or suspicious activity is asked to come forward. Anyone who received a package of antisemitic material is also asked to contact investigators. “The OPP is committed to thoroughly investigating these incidents, supporting affected individuals, and working with community partners to promote safety, inclusion, and respect,” continued the OPP. “Reporting hate incidents helps police respond effectively and reinforces a shared commitment to protecting the rights and dignity of all Ontarians.” Witnesses or anyone with more information that can help the ongoing investigation is urged to contact the OPP at 1-888-310-1122.
