Hundreds of drivers learned the hard way that tinted windows and hidden licence plates won’t go unnoticed by police. Caledon OPP officers recently wrapped up an eight-day traffic enforcement blitz targeting vehicle anonymity, issuing more than 1,100 charges over two weekends in February and March. Of those, police say 745 were directly related to violations like illegal window tinting and licence plate obstructions. “Dark tint limits a driver’s ability to see hazards and prevents police and other road users from seeing inside the vehicle,” says a spokesperson with the Caledon OPP detachment. “Visibility is crucial for pedestrians, cyclists, and other drivers, as they rely on visual cues, especially when crossing an intersection or turning.” Authorities say obstructed licence plates also prevent police from enforcing traffic laws or investigating crashes, which undermines public safety and effective law enforcement.
