Provincial police shared a handful of motorcycling equipment reminders on Saturday with more motorcyclists hitting the road as spring continues. First and foremost, riders are reminded to make sure they are equipped with the right headwear. That means a properly fitted DOT-approved helmet and eye protection that guards against debris from the road. Jackets and pants should be designed for impact protection at key points that help reduce injuries in the event of a fall or slide. Gloves should be durable and offer full hand protection. For boots, they should cover the ankle area and stay on in a fall. “The right riding gear isn’t just about compliance; it’s about comfort, protection and staying focused on the road,” said the OPP in a social media post. “If gear doesn’t fit or isn’t comfortable, riders are less likely to wear it properly.” Motorcycle Dangers Provincial police reported 57 motorcyclist deaths on OPP-patrolled roads in 2024, the highest number in two decades. Eleven of them were in Central Region. Speeding through intersections has been cited by experts as a major risk factor, where an estimated one third of motorcycle collisions occur, according to the OPP. Visibility has been another risk factor, and the OPP urges riders to wear bright high-quality clothing. “Take a few minutes to check your gear before your first ride,” continued the OPP in its social media post. “Being prepared helps you ride safer and enjoy the road ahead.”
