Here are some important reminders for winter driving

Believe it or not, winter driving is around the corner, which is why the OPP issued important reminders on Thursday to help ensure that local drivers prepare accordingly.

“Whether you follow the various weather networks or the Farmer’s Almanac, it looks as though we will experience an abrupt transition into winter over the coming weeks,” said Const. Edward Warman from Huntsville OPP in a news release.

Here are the winter preparation tips that were issued by the OPP:

• Ensure your fuel tank and windshield washer fluid are topped up.
• Make sure your other vehicle fluids are serviced and snow tires are installed.
• Have an emergency travel kit with food, a blanket, a candle, and a phone charger in case you get stranded.
• Clear snow from your vehicle’s windows and roof before driving.
• Do a circle check of your vehicle when stopping to look for snow accumulation, particularly on brake and taillights.
• Slow down, leave extra space, keep your eyes on the road ahead.
• Be aware of fast-changing road conditions.
• Adjust driving behaviours to the conditions.
• Remember that it is illegal to pass an operating snowplow.

According to the Farmers’ Almanac, Ontario could see above average snow this winter, with parts of the province possibly experiencing snow by late October.
