Despite efforts the Town of Wasaga Beach has made to protect the endangered Piping Plovers, three newly-hatched chicks, unfortunately, didn’t survive. An adult Piping Plover also didn’t make it. The Town says after working closely with Ontario Parks, Birds Canada and other local conservation partners, the sad result was due to natural threats – a mix of rainy and windy conditions and a high number of birds of prey in the area. “Even with strong stewardship measures in place, not every risk can be prevented,” the Town says in a release. According to the Town, the pair of Plovers that arrived at the nesting grounds along Beach Area 1 laid four eggs and from there, three chicks hatched—the ones that ended up not surviving. In addition to the couple, another adult Plover flew in to visit. If you did math, there are two that remain. So, if you’re planning to visit the beach this summer, you might be lucky and see one or two.
