Two neighbouring homes were damaged by a fire in downtown Huntsville early Friday morning. Firefighters from Huntsville and Lake of Bays were called to Lorne and Minerva streets around 5 a.m. after two separate 911 calls. According to fire officials, the blaze started in one home before spreading to the other. “Firefighters began simultaneously attacking both fires using hose lines,” said officials. “Audible smoke alarms could be heard by firefighters as they made entry into both dwellings.” Residents safely escaped without injuries and all pets were accounted for. Several roads in the area remain closed Friday morning. Police say Lorne Street South is closed in both directions between Main Street West and Mary Street West, while Minerva Street East is shut down between Lorne Street South and Centre Street South. Drivers are asked by police to avoid the area. The cause of the fire remains under investigation, with police adding that the blaze does not seem to be suspicious at this time.
