More than 20 crashes reported in dense fog conditions

Fog patches have been wreaking havoc on the roads in Simcoe County and just north of the Greater Toronto Area on Saturday as the OPP has reported numerous crashes throughout the day.

Elmvale

Just before 3 p.m., the OPP reported a crash at Yonge Street/County Road 27 and Flos Road 8.

One person was hospitalized with ‘non-life-threatening’ injuries.

The area was closed for about an hour and a half and has since reopened.

Lindsay

Just before 10 p.m., there was a multi-car crash on Eldon Road between Quaker Road and Skyline Road in Oakwood, with the OPP confirming reports of poor visibility.

Minor injuries were reported and the area reopened before noon.

Kawartha Lakes

Simcoe Road was closed at around 4:30 p.m. near Ramsey Road after a reported multi-vehicle collision.

The OPP confirmed that visibility was poor throughout the City of Kawartha Lakes and cautioned against unnecessary travel.

The area has since reopened.

Peterborough

According to Peterborough County OPP, officers received a call at around 8:50 a.m. for a multi-car crash on the southbound side of Highway 115 between Porter Road and Boundary Road.

Police say the incident started as a single-vehicle crash, but nearly nine cars piled into the first vehicle and each other due to limited visibility in fog conditions.

Four people were reportedly hospitalized as a precaution with minor injuries.

The southbound side of Highway 115 remained closed in the area as emergency crews continued working on the scene.

The area has since reopened.

Highway 9

Highway 9 was closed for approximately an hour Saturday afternoon between 15th Side Road and 12th Concession Road after the OPP reported multiple crashes in the area due to poor visibility.

The area reopened by 2:30 p.m. and minor injuries were reported.

The OPP later closed the eastbound lanes of the highway between St. Andrew’s Road and northbound lanes on Mountainview Road at Beech Grove Side Road in Caledon due to flooding.

Bottom Line

Environment Canada issued a yellow fog warning for much of the region, advising that there could be ‘near zero’ visibility in some areas.

The OPP confirmed to CTV News that there are at least ten ongoing collision investigations, with poor visibility reported in many of them.

South Simcoe Police also confirmed that they have responded to ten crashes between Innisfil and Bradford.

“Drivers are urged to adjust their driving behaviour for the current conditions,” said a South Simcoe Police officer in a Facebook post. “Those on foot should exercise extreme caution around roadways as well.”

Environment Canada says the fog patches will dissipate Saturday evening.
