Transportation company Metrolinx has been fined by the Provincial Court in Barrie for illegally discharging fuel in Lake Simcoe. The incident, according to the office of Court Services in Barrie dates to August of 2022, at 280 Lakeshore Drive, east of the Allandale Go Station. On Tuesday, the crown corporation pleaded guilty to count #2 on the charging document Under the Ontario Water Resources Act. Barrie Court Services defines that as “discharging, causing, or permitting the discharge of material, namely diesel fuel, into Kempenfelt Bay.” The company was fined a $185,000 with an additional 25 per cent ‘victim fine’ surcharge. "We have worked with the City of Barrie to support remediation efforts and will pay the associated fine," Metrolinx said in a statement to CTV News. “We have strengthened oversight and implemented additional fuel management controls to help prevent a similar incident from occurring in the future,” the corporation said. The company has been given 120 days to pay the fine the courts.
