Lithium-ion batteries can overheat, catch fire, or explode: Know the facts

It’s a topic that is easily overlooked by many: Lithium-ion batteries.

They are just about everywhere, in bikes, phones, garage door openers, tools, toys, and more.

Did you know that batteries can overheat, catch fire, or explode if damaged, overcharged, or stored improperly?

This week is Fire Prevention Week, and the City of Orillia is stressing the importance of battery safety. If you have a few of these laying around at home, here are a few tips to prevent your lithium-ion batteries from catching fire:

• Store batteries in a cool, dry place.
• Avoid exposing them to extreme temperatures.
• Use the manufacturer’s charger and avoid overcharging.

“Always use the charger that came with the device or one approved by the manufacturer. If the cord only works when you bend it just right, it’s time to replace it,” stated the city.

If a battery catches fire, leave the area immediately and call 911.

To help residents “charge smart and stay alert,” Barrie Fire Service is also hosting free community events throughout the week.
