Looking to plan a fall colours trip? Some trees in parts of central Ontario are starting to see some change in colour as the weather cools down and summer begins to make way for fall. The northern part of our region, especially, is starting to see some colour begin to take shape. According to Discover Muskoka’s fall colour report, Gravenhurst, Bracebridge and Huntsville are seeing small pockets of colour sprinkled throughout forests. Those communities are listed at a 10 per cent colour change. Residents and visitors can start to enjoy fall colour viewing as early as this weekend, while peak maple fall colour will begin early October and peak golden encore opportunities happen during mid-October. Further north in Algonquin Park, hints of colour are beginning to show as well. The park’s Sugar Maple forest is currently showing a change from deep green to yellowish green. Also starting to show signs of fall are the Maple canopy, which is an orangish red, the Aspen or Poplar canopy which is an orangey yellow and the Tamarack colour is yellow with hints of orange. According to Algonquin’s Park website, fall colour is affected by a variety of factors, including daylight length, moisture, temperature, frost, wind and heavy rain.
