A local hockey team has been chosen as part of a special sponsorship program, spearheaded by a major retailer. Home improvement retailer RONA has announced the Barrie Sharks will be one of the 150 minor hockey teams enrolled in the third edition of its RONA Rookies program. Part of the Ontario Women’s Hockey League and the face of the Barrie Women’s Hockey Association, the Barrie Sharks offer women and girls the chance to participate in competitive youth and adult teams, development programs and house league teams. “Hockey has deep roots in Canada’s communities, through the RONA Rookies program, we are proud to support families and communities that bring the sport to life and to help more kids and teens fully enjoy their season,” said Catherine Laporte, chief digital and marketing at RONA. The Sharks will receive a $3,000 sponsorship for the 2026-2027 season, which includes a $1,000 grant to take part in tournaments or fund other team activates, apparel featuring the team’s logo as well as fan accessories.
