From walking dogs and caring for shelter animals to supporting outreach programs and community events, volunteers are the driving force behind a non-profit dedicated to helping furry friends in need. With it being National Volunteer Week, the Ontario SPCA and Humane Society is celebrating a major milestone, with the charity welcoming its 1,000th volunteer. The organization is recognizing the vast number of Canadians from across the province that have willingly signed up to give their time and skills to provide animal care. Kim Dooley, provincial manager of volunteer development, says, “Volunteers are the heart of our organization. Their time, skills, and compassion strengthen every part of our work.” Some responsibilities volunteers take on to help keep daily operations running smoothly include assisting with administration for pet adoption, food distribution, cleaning shelter spaces and food bowls, doing laundry, and socializing with the animal residents. If you’re interested in lending a hand, the Barrie and District Animal Centre is calling for additional support, especially for foster volunteers able to care for large breed dogs, new mothers, and vulnerable animals.
