Chances are either you or people you know are sick or have been sick lately. It’s that time of year and this year is a bad one. Influenza (flu) season has hit earlier than expected, with the case load more than four times the number over the last two years during the same time period, especially in children, according to the Simcoe Muskoka District Health Unit (SMDHU). The health unit warns that number is expected to rise in the coming weeks, heading into the holiday season and people spending more time in larger gatherings with family and friends. To combat the illness, the SMDHU is recommending people get the flu shot if they haven’t already. The health unit says getting the vaccine is the best way to protect yourself against the flu, which can reduce the chances of serious illness and hospitalization. According to the SMDHU, despite this year’s main flu strain having changed over the summer, getting the shot is still the best form of protection and can minimize symptoms and the need for medical care. When it comes to prevention, the health unit advises washing hands and disinfecting surfaces to reduce the spread of germs. It says an additional layer of protection would be to wear a face mask in public places, especially for those at higher risk of infection. Finally, SMDHU reminds people to stay home when they are experiencing symptoms and feeling sick. The flu shot is available at pharmacies for ages two and up and for children between six months and two years, they can get the shot at a health unit clinic or family doctor’s. The SMDHU says COVID-19 and respiratory syncytial virus (RSV) are also on the rise and recommends the same preventative measures as for the flu: vaccines and masks. More information can be found on the SMDHU website where there is a weekly respiratory virus update page.
