Marc Ricard and Patrick Roy say they have only been in the burger business for four years and two of those years as a food truck. Despite the infancy of the Gravenhurst-based restaurant, Burger Boys on Main, the place managed to draw the attention of some major players, namely from the NHL. “It stemmed from our social media guy sending me a message stating that the nutrition expert for the New York Islanders wanted us to cater a luncheon for them right after their practice,” Ricard told CTV News in an interview. According to the Islanders’ social media, the team was in town, practicing at the Gravenhurst Centennial Centre on Sept. 29. That same afternoon, the team had a private lunch catered to them by Burger Boys on Main. “I got in touch with the nutritionist and she said she generally doesn’t do fast food, but the guys would really appreciate it on their last day of training,” Ricard said. “They gave us three days notice,” Roy said. “We were kind of back and forth, not 100 per cent sure if it was actually going to happen and finally we got confirmation and we put up a plan and we got it done,” Roy added. “So Pat and I designed up a plan to do smoked pork loin with crispy chicken sandwiches and we also did a quinoa salad and a coleslaw to accompany those two items,” he explained. “It’s kind of cool,” Ricard said as he explained that Roy was unable to attend the luncheon. “I didn’t realize how big these guys are,” Ricard joked, “they’re monsters.” “Some guys walked away with monster plates and some guys walked away with just a chicken sandwich,” Ricard said. Ricard told CTV News he had a chance to take a picture and make conversation with Islanders Centre Bo Hovart. “Here’s married to the daughter of a previous mayor of Gravenhurst and he lives here in the off-season, so that’s his connection to the area,” Ricard said. For both Ricard and Roy, the moment comes as a bit of an achievement. “I’ve always wanted to have a business like what we’re doing now,” Roy said. Each of them got into the burger business after decades long careers in unrelated fields. “I retired and I needed to keep busy,” Roy said, “this is something that both Marc and I enjoy doing and we always strive to do better every year and right now it’s pretty sweet.” “We’re very fortunate,” he said. Ricard and Roy are Toronto Maple Leafs and Winnpeg Jets fans respectively and both say they would welcome the chance to feed their favourite teams.
