The town of Georgina celebrated the official opening of Terry Fox Memorial Park on Thursday, honouring the Canadian legend and his marathon of hope. Located at 50 Thomas Smith Street, the park features nine memorial panels that highlight Fox’s journey of more than 5,000 kilometres from St. John’s. Newfoundland, to Thunder Bay, Ont. “The new Terry Fox Memorial Park is more than a beautiful destination, it is a place where Terry’s inspirational story and enduring legacy can continue to inspire generations,” said Mayor Margaret Quirk. Fox’s brother, Fred Fox, was on location for the grand opening. “Terry Fox’s Marathon of Hope captured the hearts of Canadians and people around the world and this special park gives our community a meaningful place to reflect on his courage, determination and remarkable vision,” Quirk said. The park features a fully accessible composite play structure, a large shade structure, a walking path around the entire park and an age-friendly fitness zone. Residents can also experience a full river-themed splash pad designed to replicate Fox’s journey along the St. Lawrence River.
