Today, Penetanguishene honours the past while celebrating the present. Penetanguishene proudly celebrates Franco-Ontarian Day, recognizing the rich history, culture, language, and contributions of Ontario’s French-speaking community. For more than 400 years, Francophones have been an integral part of Ontario society. In 2010, September 25 was officially declared Franco-Ontarian Day in recognition of the Franco-Ontarian flag, which was first raised on September 25, 1975. The flag was created by Gaétan Gervais and Michel Dupuis and is considered a powerful symbol of Francophone Ontario. As one of Ontario’s oldest French-speaking communities, Penetanguishene has a deep-rooted Francophone heritage that shapes its identity and strengthens the community.
