Three days after a fatal shooting in a small Simcoe County community, police are still canvasing the area. Investigators remain on scene in Midland for what turned out to be a fatal shooting, claiming the life of Tryce James, an 18-year-old Etobicoke man. A couple of residents were sitting on the patio outside their unit of the Maplegrove apartment complex at 559 King Street. “I was sitting on the couch just reading and I heard what sounded like loud knocking on the door,” one woman says. That loud knocking turned out to be gun shots. Another resident says there’s a lot of people in and out of that building. “There is a lot of drugs going around here,” she says. Police say they are investigating the shooting as a homicide, which happened Friday night. A security guard at the building tells CTV News he has been told there will now be security at the building 24/7, something that wasn’t in place before the shooting. Midland Mayor Bill Gordon says all he knows is what’s in the police press releases. “Many people are concerned there’s still a suspect or suspects still at large, so they don’t know who’s accountable,” says Gordon. While there is still no word on suspects or if there is a suspect considered armed and dangerous, investigators say they believe there is no threat to public safety and that this was an isolated incident. Police tell CTV News they are unable to say whether they will be back in the area on Tuesday or not. Authorities are still asking anyone who has information, video or dash cam footage of the incident to come forward to Southern Georgian Bay OPP. Police say there are no other updates or details they can share at this time. Officers say they responded to reports of gunshots at that apartment at around 8 p.m. When officers arrived, they say they found one person with gunshot wounds, who was taken to the hospital and later pronounced deceased. Gordon encourages residents to not be afraid to call police when they see suspicious activity. “We all have a role in keeping our communities safe. It’s not the police’s job - it’s all of our jobs.”
