Chefs to sharpen knives, compete iron chef style in support of Busby Centre

Two chefs will go head-to-head in an Iron Chef–style competition, serving up bold flavours, big personalities and unforgettable dishes on April 29.

It’s time for two local chefs to be put to the test.

The Peggy Hill team presents an iron chef competition at Tangle Creek Golf and Country Club.

Two sous chefs are set to face off with General Manager Richard Edmonds saying the competitiveness is already being felt around the club.

“They don’t get to put on the boxing gloves and start fighting in the middle of the event itself, but two great kids got a lot of talent and excited to see what happens that night,” said Edmonds.

The two chefs will be put to the test, Ian Brown, executive chef at the club said the chefs will be creating three-course meals with the first two courses containing a secret ingredient each, the third course will be dessert and the chefs will have free choice on what they want to create, with the audience determining who takes home the crown.

“Two of the courses will be marked at the 15 points, and the last course will be marked out of 20 points,” said Brown. “So a total of 50 points for the winner.”

Brown added this is a great opportunity for the club house and the chefs to show off their talents with all the money raised going right back into the community at the Busby Centre.

“This is a great opportunity for my two young sous chefs that are hungry, like to battle, have a little competition, just have a fun night and create some great food, a great atmosphere, and for people to come here and enjoy themselves at Tangle Creek,” said Brown.

For Peggy Hill, supporting the Busby Centre is personal in honour of her late father. Growing up, food was not always a guarantee.

“I think once he passed, it became more of a passion for me and for his memory that I want to make sure that people always have food to eat,” said Hill. “It’s a basic human right.”

From helping people living on the streets or battling addiction to supportive housing and social services, the Busby Centre continues its work on the front lines lending a hand to those who need it most.

Executive Director of the Busby Centre Sara Peddle said the money raised through the iron chef event will go directly to supporting those at the Busby Centre.

“We really want to keep working towards finding housing for every individual that is experiencing homelessness in our community because that’s really the only solution to homelessness - to find housing for them,” said Peddle. “Every dollar counts so that we can continue to do that important work.”

“I think the best thing to do is get involved. Busby does great work. They’re there for people emotionally. They’re there for people for somewhere to sleep. They’re there for people to help them eat. So, I mean, what could be better than that?” said Peddle.
