A community organization, that helps to ensure no families feel alone when it comes to pregnancy and infant loss, is marking a significant milestone this month. Bridget’s Bunnies, a pregnancy and infant loss foundation in Barrie, is marking three years of handcrafted, crocheted bunnies which get donated to families who have experienced pregnancy or infant loss. The charitable organization says it has made 694 bunnies – the equivalent of 833 balls of yarn, since March 2023. These bunnies get included in a comfort kit, a kind of care package that includes resources like books and self-care items like journals, tea and candles. The organization delivered 785 comfort kits across Simcoe Muskoka last year with 457 crocheted bunnies. Not only has this special milestone been reached but a volunteer with the organization who’s been paramount in the execution of the initiative is being recognized as well. Jen Kinsella, who doesn’t go far without her crochet hooks and yarn, made nearly half of those with her total of 200, last year alone. “When I began crocheting for Bridget’s Bunnies, I did it in remembrance of our grandsons, Simon and Nicholas, and to show support for our son and daughter-in-law,” Kinsella says. “I never imagined the profound impact these bunnies would have.” Kinsella also makes “made with love” tags, small cards showing families that their baby is remembered, grief is valid and their story matters. A tag gets attached to every bunny that goes in a comfort kit. “My time making bunnies is a small gesture, but through every stitch, I hope to bring a bit of comfort to parents who are grieving,” Kinsella says. “Crocheting has been my offering of support and it’s incredibly rewarding to see the difference it makes.” The organization has a team of over 40 volunteers who come together every month to crochet, knit, share stories and build community. “Jen’s kindness and dedication are truly woven into every aspect of our work and are a fitting example of what Bunny Making is all about at Bridget’s Bunnies,” said Mary Skwarek, Development Coordinator. The group welcomes anyone wishing to join, no matter the skill level and free materials are provided. Bridget’s Bunnies started in 2018 when Theresa and Mat Morrison’s daughter, Bridget, was born still. The group has provided thousands of comfort kits to families who have experienced pregnancy or infant loss. Bridget’s Bunnies also gives financial support to community organizations offering bereavement support for those who need it.
