20-year-old snapping turtle gets new lease on life at Muskoka, Ont. sanctuary

A Muskoka wildlife sanctuary is welcoming its newest permanent resident, a 20-year-old snapping turtle with a big personality and a new lease on life.

SqueeGee, also known as “G,” is a snapping turtle that was brought in from the Royal Botanical Gardens after the team decided it was time to give him a healthy and new home.

ZooCheck and Niagara Action for Animals united to build a custom enclosure, perfectly suited for SqueeGee and his large size.

This new and improved zen space is designed for turtles in permanent captivity who cannot be released, ensuring that all of their special biological and behavioral needs are met.

“Now, SqueeGee can roam, soak, and enjoy a peaceful life close to nature,” Aspen Valley Wildlife Sanctuary staff said over social media.

In summer, the ancient resident can bask outdoors and may even find himself tagging along on guided tours. With winter on the horizon, staff says he’ll cozy up in a specially designed indoor habitat at Aspen Valley Wildlife Sanctuary.
