Electric cars are no longer only for saving on gas and helping the environment. Nowadays, they can be fast, powerful and fun to drive.

Take for instance the new performance version of the Tesla Model S called the P85D. Now, the original Model S was already fast, but the 691-horsepower all-wheel P85D comes with a button for an "Insane Mode."

When set to "Insane," the P85D will launch from 0 to 100 km/h (60 mph) in just 3.2 seconds. That's quicker than most 500-horsepower Ferraris or Lamborghinis. 'Insane' is actually pretty apt.

Brooks Weisblat, editor of automotive enthusiast magazine Drag Times, recently shot the YouTube video below of a bunch of unsuspecting friends of his and their reactions to his Model S P85D's acceleration. As of Thursday afternoon, the video showing their shocked (and oft-times curse-laden reactions) had already racked up more than 1.5 million views in just two days.

The main reason the P85D is able to accelerate so quickly is that electric cars generate 100 percent of their torque from the moment you hit the pedal whereas gas powered vehicles build power gradually.
