Love, Lies and Lunenburg: Nova Scotia shines in new TV series

We Were Liars is now streaming.

The eight-episode series follows the Sinclair family as they gather each summer on Beechwood Island. But behind the privilege and picture-perfect moments is a devastating secret.

The story is set on a private island off Martha’s Vineyard, but the new series was filmed almost entirely in Nova Scotia. Cast members say the Maritime landscape not only matched the book’s vibe - it elevated it.

“We were filming in Halifax, Nova Scotia, but also in a beautiful place called Lunenburg that really looks a lot like Martha’s Vineyard,” said Emily Alyn Lind, who plays lead character Cadence Sinclair Eastman. “It was just so hauntingly beautiful. I think our location was a character itself in this show.”

Actor Rahul Kohli agreed. “This part of Nova Scotia is idyllic,” he said. “That coastline is just spectacular… You walk into these locations, and they’re just breathtaking.”

Co-star David Morse says the environment made the shoot feel almost surreal. “Even between takes, you’d just sit there and admire the beach and the coastline.”

The cast says filming in rural areas also helped build chemistry. “We were in small towns and it lent itself to us all being together all the time,” said actress Candice King. “It was really helpful for the family dynamic.”

The series is based on the novel by E. Lockhart, who helped co-create the show alongside Julie Plec and Carina Adly MacKenzie.

“I felt like it was a grand adventure that I was being invited on, a chance to use my storytelling skills in new ways in a new medium,” said Lockhart.

We Were Liars is now streaming on Prime Video, with all eight episodes available to watch.
