Prince Edward Island has wrapped up public consultations for its proposed legislation that could bring professional mixed martial arts (MMA) events to the province. Marla Morrison, public engagement officer for the Executive Council, said they received 50 submissions on the proposed Combative Sport Commissioner Act, which, if passed, would establish a legal framework for MMA, kickboxing, and professional and amateur boxing exhibitions. The legislation would create oversight for organizers and governing bodies. P.E.I. is currently the only Maritime province without a combat sport commission. Morrison said 44 of the received submissions expressed general support for the development of the act. “With public input now complete, the department is proceeding to the next phase of engagement,” Morrison said in an email. “This includes internal consultation and targeted technical discussions with key sports stakeholders. “Feedback from these consultations will play an important role in informing and finalizing the legislation.” For more P.E.I. news, visit our dedicated provincial page.
