Prince Edward Island’s new Liberal leader says he will run in a provincial byelection next month. The byelection has been called for District 2 – Georgetown-Pownal, which is currently vacant. Former cabinet minister Steven Myers resigned from the seat on Oct. 3. Robert Mitchell, who is running for the Liberals, previously served as an MLA from 2007 to 2020 and has held cabinet positions, such as health minister. He was elected as leader of the P.E.I. Liberal Party on Oct. 4. The P.E.I. PC Party says public servant Brendan Curran will seek the nomination for District 2. The returning office in Cardigan will open at 9 a.m. Wednesday to receive candidate nomination papers. The deadline for candidate nominations is Nov. 21 at 2 p.m. Advance voting days will take place on Nov. 29, Dec. 1, and Dec. 5, from 9 a.m. to 7 p.m. The byelection is officially scheduled for Dec. 8. “All eligible electors in District 2 should visit www.electionspei.ca for complete election information,” said chief electoral officer Tim Garrity. “Contact information and office details for the District 2 Returning Officer are also available online.” With files from The Canadian Press For more P.E.I. news, visit our dedicated provincial page.
