People will be asked to wear a mask when they visit health facilities on Prince Edward Island beginning this Friday. Health PEI says the move is in response to increased respiratory illness activity and for patient safety. Visitors will be asked to wear a mask within two meters of a patient, as well as in hallways of acute care settings. If visitors don’t bring their own mask, they will be available at entrances to health facilities. “This is an important decision that receives careful consideration,” said Jillian Nixon, the director of occupational health, safety and wellness at Health PEI, in a news release. “Masking during respiratory illness season protects everyone, including patients, staff, and the public. Masking is just one proactive step we can take to help keep the system stable.” Health PEI says staff members have guidelines for when they may remove their masks, and they are strongly encouraged to get their up-to-date COVID and flu shots. The masking policy will be updated “as soon as it is safe to do so.” For more P.E.I. news, visit our dedicated provincial page.
